
Welcome to the second edition of Heads and Tales. Before anything else I’d just like to thank everyone who has signed up for our e-newsletter - 889 of you and counting. I’m delighted that there’s so much enthusiasm out there for the castle and not just from Scotland but from all over the UK, Europe and the USA. And you also seem to be enjoying our new website, as it’s getting lots of visitors every day. Anyway, we’ve got lots to tell you about in this edition, including our best-ever line-up of winter events and activities, plus the results of our photo competition, and the latest update on the palace project. Free weekend Stirling Castle will be opening its gates for free this weekend following an announcement by Minister for Culture, External Affairs and the Constitution, Michael Russell. | Birthday Greetings On 8 December, 1542 the first cries were heard from a newborn babe who grew up to become one of the most famous and controversial figures in Scottish history. To mark the birthday of Mary, Queen of Scots the award-winning author and TV producer Roderick Graham will be welcoming visitors to join him for a talk in the Chapel Royal of Stirling Castle.

 | In December 1566, Mary, Queen of Scots held a magnificent three day renaissance festival at the castle to celebrate the baptism of her son and heir, James VI. Festivities included a magnificent banquet, human hobby horses, and the first fireworks display to be witnessed in Scotland!
